DIES IN THE LIGHT presents DARK KABARETT

Weimar, Berlin, 1928. The economy was collapsing, the politics were rotting, AND ART, MUSIC AND DANCE WERE THE MOST ALIVE THEY HAD EVER BEEN . Cabarets smoked, dancers scandalized the city, and the city danced on a volcano, the fire that made these islands.
In Weimar, Berlin, “dancing on the volcano” was the phrase for a city partying while the economy, politics, and the rise of the Nazis were about to erupt. Klaus Mann’s 1939 novel Der Vulkan used the same image for the exiles fleeing the eruption. The volcano was always the warning, the ground was already hot.
Anita Berber was the spirit of Weimar, a dancer, artist, and writer who lived on the edge and died at 29. Her world is the echo of this night. She bent gender before it had a name for it; Marlene Dietrich took it to Hollywood. Come dress for the era: Crochet hats, face veils, silk and tailoring, the dark elegance and decadence of a time when women were sophisticated, emancipated and dangerous, and cross-dressed while men answered in kind. Men with fedoras, silk ties, and sharp tailoring. The dandy was the dangerous woman’s answer. This is your night to wear what you could never wear anywhere else on the island.
Silent cinema and distorted shadows of German Expressionism. The night is dark cabaret, gothic, darkwave, post-punk, steampunk, theatrical, and unapologetically dark. Performances by VIOLETTA BERETTA, DJ NOCTURNA and DJ NIGHT FOX. A clairvoyant will be present to read your fortune. Come dance on the edge of the world !
